Eye Clinic

This project transforms an existing private house into a contemporary medical treatment centre through careful renovation and a clear rear extension. A glazed patio organises the plan, separating public waiting areas from consultation rooms while bringing daylight deep into the building. The new volume is clearly legible from the street and guides patients towards the entrance. Upper floors remain adaptable for future expansion, ensuring long-term flexibility and robust use.

A Medical Treatment Centre Within an Existing Structure

The project converts and extends twos existing private house into a contemporary medical treatment centre designed to withstand the test of time. The ambition was not only to create a functional clinical environment, but to make its presence clear and legible to patients from the street.

The intervention combines the reuse of the existing ground floor with a carefully articulated new volume at the rear. Upper floors are preserved to accommodate future expansion, ensuring that the centre can adapt to evolving medical needs.

Visibility and Orientation

A key question was how to make the medical treatment centre visible and understandable upon arrival. The existing drive-through condition offered an opportunity: by extending the rear volume and shaping it around a patio, the entrance becomes clearly perceptible from the approach.

The central architectural idea is simple and deliberate: organise the programme around a glazed patio that separates public and private functions while visually connecting them. This gesture clarifies orientation and strengthens the identity of the centre.

Clear Distinction, Continuous Flow

The ground floor of the existing building accommodates back-office functions. The new intervention contains the public waiting area and consultation rooms, organised around the patio.

The patio establishes a physical and visual distinction between the reception and waiting zone at the front and the more private consultation rooms beyond. At the same time, its glazed enclosure maintains transparency between front and back office. Indirect daylight enters deep into the plan, creating a calm and comfortable environment for patients and staff.

Legibility Through Contrast

The new volume is pushed forward to create a visible link with the street. Together with the extended roof plane, it defines a covered entrance zone adjacent to the patio.

Material contrast between existing private house and contemporary extension reinforces legibility. The intervention is clearly distinguishable without overpowering the original structure. The structural approach remains straightforward and robust, allowing future reconfiguration of spaces as the medical treatment centre evolves.

The Patio as Internal Landscape

The glazed patio forms the spatial heart of the project. It acts as a resting point within the centre — for patients waiting, as well as for doctors and staff.

Beyond its organisational role, the patio introduces daylight and visual calm, functioning as an interior garden that mediates between public and private zones.

Reuse and Adaptability

The project builds on the reuse of the existing structure, limiting demolition and extending the lifecycle of the private houses.

Adaptability is embedded in the organisation: upper floors remain available for future growth, and the clear separation of functions enables phased development. Sustainability is approached through spatial efficiency, daylight optimisation and long-term flexibility.
