These four guiding principles define how we create meaningful, adaptive architecture:

Human-centered and intuitive

We believe architecture should feel intuitive: shaped by people, not imposed on them. Every space must be clear, honest, inclusive, and grounded in real human experience, from how you live and work, to how you move and interact. Designed with empathy and logic, not ego.

Practical and realistic

We reject design for design’s sake. Our work starts with understanding the real needs and translating these into solutions that are logical, feasible, and meaningful. Function, scale, and impact are aligned with reality. No frills, just honest, meaningful architecture that serves a clear purpose.

People-Planet-Prosperity

We design in harmony with the planet. Climate-responsive, adaptive, and nature-inclusive architecture is not optional. It’s essential. We build smart, reduce waste, and use space efficiently. Our choices aim to boost biodiversity, improve air and water quality, and reduce carbon impact. Sustainability is not a feature, it’s the foundation.

Flexible and future-ready

The future is uncertain. Our architecture is ready. We build for change, not just for today. Flexible, robust, and open to evolution — spaces that adapt to shifting needs and remain relevant over time.

Wesley Lanckriet is the founder and creative director of {define}, guiding the studio’s design vision and long-term strategy. He works hybrid across all projects and phases, with a strong focus on conceptual development, spatial clarity, and BIM-driven workflows. His approach blends strategic oversight with an instinct for simplicity, honest material use and spatial future-readiness.

Wesley’s background bridges craft and advanced design thinking: before graduating as an architect, he completed a professional secondary education in building construction, grounding him a hands-on understanding of materials and assembly logic.

As an architect-researcher at VUB Architectural Engineering, Wesley contributed to several pioneering European projects on circular and reversible design — including Buildings as Material Banks (BAMB), where BIM-based material passports and systemic design strategies were developed, the Circular Retrofit Lab, Europe’s first fully circular renovation of student housing using only demountable and reusable building components, the Open Source Building System, a modular and future-proof framework for adaptable dwellings and the circular scenario-based redevelopment of the Mechelen TRAP-site.

With a decade of international experience at SeARCH and UNStudio, Wesley anchors the studio’s research-driven and context-aware attitude. He translates societal and environmental challenges into adaptive spatial frameworks shaped by users, needs, context and time. He ensures that every project is robust, clear and future-ready, embodying the brand values of integrity and partnership.

Outside the studio, he is an active boulderer, bringing the precision, creativity and physical focus of this discipline into his design practice.

Robby Vandenhouwe is partner at {define} and leads the technical, structural and execution-driven side of the practice. Working hybrid across all phases, he brings depth to detailing, material logic, construction methods and collaboration with contractors. While Wesley shapes the broader conceptual vision, Robby bridges design intent with built reality and anchors projects in precision, feasibility and buildability — a complementary dynamic central to {define}.

As an architect, former project developer and BIM lecturer, Robby also serves as a bachelor’s thesis supervisor at Howest where he guides students in research-based design and BIM methodology. This academic involvement strengthens the studio’s commitment to knowledge-sharing, clarity and future-oriented practice.

Beyond architecture, Robby is competitively active in virtual indoor cycling — a discipline that mirrors his mindset: focused, precise and built on continuous refinement.

Trusted by 40+ cities, municipalities, schools, and organisations, both nationally and abroad, we collaborate on projects that matter to people, society and the planet.
