Bosjoenk

Bosjoenk transforms a well-known youth site in Ostend into a compact circular public building that brings together childcare, after-school care, a youth meeting centre and a concert hall. Organised around a generous central patio, the project combines clear circulation, shared use and a strong relationship with the adjacent Maria Hendrikapark. Flexible structural spans, layered acoustic zoning and robust outdoor spaces allow the building to evolve over time, offering a resilient and inclusive place for play, encounter and cultural activity.

A Public House for Youth, Care and Culture

Bosjoenk redefines a familiar youth site in Ostend as a new public building where childcare, after-school care, youth work and music culture are brought together in one coherent architectural figure. Set next to the Maria Hendrikapark, the project is conceived not as an isolated object but as a public infrastructure embedded within a larger landscape of everyday movement, play and encounter.

The building combines a compact circular plan with a generous relationship to its surroundings. Its ambition is to offer an inclusive and flexible environment in which children, young adults and families can find both protection and openness, each at their own scale.

Building as Social Landscape

The project starts from one clear architectural idea: organise a diverse public programme around a circular figure and a central patio, so that all functions remain distinct yet constantly related through shared space. This circular logic creates clarity within a complex brief and turns the building into a social landscape rather than a collection of separate institutions.

Bosjoenk responds directly to the park context. The building does not compete with the landscape, but frames and extends it. The result is a public house that opens itself to the rhythms of the park and strengthens the role of the site as a place of meeting, care and cultural life.

Shared Centre, Distinct Addresses

The circular volume arranges the different programmes around a continuous ring of circulation and informal meeting spaces. Each function has its own recognisable entrance and outdoor relationship, while remaining connected to the whole through the shared patio and surrounding routes.

The central patio acts as the social heart of the building: an informal meeting room for all ages, where daily crossings between children, youth organisations and families become part of the architecture. Two principal entrances connect directly to this inner court, which operates as a climate-buffered void and a clear distributive centre. It helps organise access, keeps flows readable and allows overlap or separation where needed.

A Flexible Circular Framework

The structural concept is based on a clear grid beneath a continuous roof plate. This neutral framework keeps the spans robust and legible, while allowing interior partitions to remain lightweight and reconfigurable. The building can therefore adapt over time to future forms of childcare, youth work and cultural programming without structural intervention.

On the upper floor, the creative hub, rehearsal rooms and recording studio are carefully positioned above the concert hall. Layered acoustic zoning and differentiated mass–spring assemblies ensure appropriate performance conditions within a compact footprint, balancing technical precision with long-term flexibility.

From Patio to Park

The landscape strategy extends the programme outward in a gradual sequence. Protected gardens serve the youngest children, flexible play zones unfold beneath existing tree clusters, and shared terraces support the activities of youth organisations. Above, a semi-intensive roof garden acts as a seasonal lookout across the park.

Covered edges around the patio create shaded routes and informal outdoor rooms, allowing people to gather, pause or play while remaining connected to the wider site. The outdoor spaces are robust, low-maintenance and tailored to different users without losing their overall coherence.

Robustness Through Clarity

Bosjoenk is designed as a resilient public building in which structure, circulation, programme and landscape are closely aligned. Preserved tree clusters, graded play areas and the roof garden contribute to ecological buffering and climatic comfort, while the compact footprint limits surface impact.

Futureproofing lies in the combination of structural neutrality, durable outdoor spaces and a building organisation that can be re-imagined over time. Bosjoenk demonstrates how a youth-focused public building can remain open to change while offering immediate clarity, generosity and care.
